(Baonghean.vn) - Expelling extremists from Syria's Idlib province must be the top priority in the current stage of the Syrian peace process, Russian President Vladimir Putin said after a meeting with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts on September 7.

The Russian leader once again asserted that Moscow has “irrefutable” evidence that terrorist gangs entrenched in the province, currently controlled by gunmen, are trying to stage “false flag” attacks using chemical weapons.

“Our absolute priority now is to completely clear Syria of terrorists,” Putin said, adding that Russian forces had recently helped liberate the war-torn southwest of the country and confirming that Idlib province had now become the primary target.

“The presence of gunmen poses a direct threat to the population in this entire region,” the Russian president warned.

The leader also expressed hope that the gunmen “will be wise enough” to lay down their weapons and retreat.
