On August 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that his country will develop medium- and short-range missile systems, but will not deploy them before the US does so.
Mr. Putin pledged that Russia's national security would be firmly guaranteed in the context of new missiles being built in the US.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Helsinki with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto, the Russian President stressed that Moscow needs to respond appropriately to new challenges related to the US's production of missiles banned under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF).
President Putin said that Washington had been developing this type of missile long before announcing its withdrawal from the INF. Moscow expressed disappointment at the US testing a missile banned under the INF, as this would make the situation in the world more tense.
