According to RT news agency on January 11, during his visit to Chukotka on January 10, in response to a question from a father of five children at a brief press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin supported a proposal to exempt large families in the Far East from housing tax.

"Of course, the federal budget can provide appropriate support to benefit large families in the Far East," President Putin said, adding that he would ask the government and relevant committees of the State Council to work on this issue.

The Russian leader was also pleased, because in his country "having many children is becoming fashionable."

“According to opinion polls, in 2022, 60% of Russian men and 70% of Russian women wanted to have two or more children. This view, which builds strong families, is constantly being strengthened and developed. And of course, in this regard, state support for such families is very important. We are trying to do this well,” President Putin shared.

Also related to this topic, President Putin opposed the proposal to expand the use of maternity allowance funds, particularly for purchasing cars.

“You know, what am I always afraid of? Families, especially large families, always have so many needs. It seems like an ‘ocean’ of needs: health, education… But I’ve always been afraid that, as soon as we start allowing this maternity allowance to be used for various purposes, we will ultimately be unable to guarantee the rights of the children,” President Putin emphasized, adding that the maternity allowance was initially created as a tool to support large families in important matters.

The Russian leader will ask the government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade to consider separately the issue of providing subsidies for purchasing cars for large families in the Far East.

On January 10th, President Vladimir Putin made his first visit of 2024, traveling to Russia's far eastern Chukotka region. In Chukotka, Putin visited a multi-story greenhouse complex where vegetables are grown year-round in freezing conditions.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border with the Bering Strait, adjacent to the US state of Alaska.
