Mr Sharaa addressed the nation in his first speech since he was appointed transitional president by armed factions on January 29, after they toppled former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a lightning offensive last year.

The armed group leading the offensive, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has since formed an interim government, which has hosted high-level diplomatic delegations from Western and Arab countries, who are keen to help stabilize the country after 13 years of civil war.

In his speech, Sharaa announced that he would form a small legislative body to fill the gap in parliament until new elections are held, after the Syrian parliament was dissolved on January 29.

He also said that in the coming days he would announce the formation of a committee to prepare for a national dialogue conference where Syrians could discuss the country's future political agenda.

He then said a "constitutional declaration" would be issued, referring to the process of drafting a new constitution for Syria.

Mr Sharaa has previously said that the process of drafting a new constitution and holding elections could take up to four years.
