President Trump easily re-elected in 2020?

The South China Morning Post believes that although the Republican Party lost control of the House of Representatives to the Democratic Party in the recent midterm elections, this is not a big problem and the prospect of President Donald Trump being re-elected in 2020 is almost certain.

Americans who dislike President Donald Trump celebrated when Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives to Democrats in the recent midterm elections. But while Trump’s detractors cheered, they might have been advised to temper their cheers with the reality that his days in the White House are far from numbered. The liberal media may be excited about “the beginning of the end of the Trump era,” but that’s wishful thinking.

Although President Trump is not on the ballot in this year’s midterm elections, this is clearly a referendum on his leadership. And he is not far off declaring that he is “close to an absolute victory” – President Trump is the biggest winner in terms of the 2020 re-election campaign.

That campaign worked. Mr. Trump is on the road and almost certain to win a second term in the most powerful office on the planet.

The “blue wave” that Democrats hoped would bring big changes ended up being a weak ripple, with the party only managing to win control of the House of Representatives, which was seen as a modest victory. This does not bode well for them in 2020.

Meanwhile, the Republicans have shown strength in the Senate, expanding and strengthening the “red wall” to push back the opposition.

The support of voters - who are displeased with President Trump's agenda, his statements and statements that are considered racist - is not enough to overcome the solid support he has from many American voters, who support his nationalist and populist doctrine, and are attracted by the celebrity status and unusual personality of the White House owner.

Say what you will about Mr Trump, but there is no denying that he is a politician who defies conventional wisdom, with a unique ability to beat the odds to the punch.

Mr Trump was a phenomenon in the midterm election campaign. He seemed to make it a campaign for himself, rather than for the Republican candidates he supported, and he did not exaggerate much when he claimed to be able to reverse their fortunes.

Those celebrating an election “defeat” should remember that Bill Clinton’s Democratic Party was overwhelmed by a “red tsunami” in the 1994 midterm elections, losing both the House and Senate to the Republicans. Clinton’s approval rating was no higher than Trump’s (45%), but he was still re-elected.

Former President Barack Obama suffered an even more crushing defeat in the House of Representatives in the 2010 midterm elections, although his Republican Party retained the Senate. Again, with similar margins, Obama won a second term.

And Mr. Trump will win the same in 2020.

As for congressional oversight, investigations and subpoenas are what Democrats would do to Mr. Trump if they controlled the House.

“They can play that game, but we can play it better because we have the Senate,” Trump said. “They can scrutinize us, we can scrutinize them, and it goes back and forth. And that can be very beneficial to me politically because I think I play that game better than they do.”

People should probably believe that too.
