CNN quoted a White House official as saying that on Friday evening, May 29 (US time), US President Donald Trump was evacuated to the White House underground bunker for a short time when a crowd of protesters surrounded the building.

President Trump spent an hour in the bunker before being brought back to the surface. It is unclear whether first lady Melania Trump and son Barron Trump were taken down to the bunker with Mr Trump.

President Trump praised the Secret Service for its handling of protests outside the White House on Friday night following the death of black man George Floyd last week in Minneapolis.

In another related development, on May 31, the National Guard was deployed in many major cities in the US to ensure security and order after a wave of protests spread across the US for the fifth consecutive night to protest the death of a black man by a white police officer in Minneapolis last week.

The US Department of Defense said about 5,000 National Guard members have been deployed in 15 states, including the capital Washington DC, and about 2,000 soldiers are on standby./.
