(Baonghean.vn) - Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy should abandon his intention to reclaim the Crimean Peninsula for his country. This is the opinion of the country's former Defense Minister Anatoly Gritsenko.

Speaking on the Ukraine 24 TV channel, former Minister Gritsenko said: “It is time to admit that it is impossible to return Crimea in the coming decades. President Zelenskiy must realize that it is impossible to return Crimea during his term and should not deceive himself anymore." Gritsenko added that the “Russian spirit” reigns in Donbass, with polls showing that more than 80% of the region's residents want to live in Russia.

On January 4, Russian State Duma (lower house) deputy representing Crimea, Mikhail Sheremet, said that in case Kiev attacks Crimea and Donbass, the Ukrainian army will face a miserable fate, and the country's president will have to face an international court. He recalled that in 2014, nearly 80% of Ukrainian soldiers stationed in Crimea sided with the people of the peninsula and swore allegiance to Russia.

In his New Year's address, President Zelenskiy mentioned the issue of Crimea and Donbass, calling the war in the east of the country a pain and setting a goal of ending the war next year. President Zelenskiy noted that he did not wait for "the world to solve our problems", so Ukraine took the first step to put the issue of reclaiming Crimea back on the international agenda./.
