President Yanukovych told Ms Nuland that he "supports implementing constitutional reform as quickly as possible", and insisted that "dialogue and compromise" were the only way to get the country out of its political crisis.
The two sides discussed political reforms and the possibility of continuing negotiations between the Ukrainian president and opposition leaders. Mr Yanukovych said he supported the opposition's demands for constitutional reform, although this must be done through a process involving the Constitutional Court and continued parliamentary hearings.
Mr. Yanukovych also supports speeding up the release of activists arrested during the recent wave of civil unrest./.
