On February 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron.
In a video recorded outside the presidential office in Kiev on February 26, President Zelensky announced that he would stay in the capital. President Zelensky emphasized: "We will not lay down our arms, we will defend the country."
On the same day, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry warned residents of the capital that fighting was taking place on the streets, asking everyone to stay calm, be careful and not leave shelter. The Ministry of Interior stressed: "If you are at home, do not go near windows or balconies. Hide behind curtains or wrap something around yourself to avoid being injured by debris. If you hear sirens, immediately go to the nearest shelter."
Myhailo Podoliak, a senior adviser to the Ukrainian president, delivered a defiant message just two days after the Russian invasion began. Speaking on state television, Podoliak said: "I don't think that after what is happening now, Ukraine is at a disadvantage. Even if negotiations begin, Ukraine will set the conditions."
