The B-segment sedan market, priced between 500 and 600 million VND, consistently holds a significant market share and importance for automakers, especially in developing markets like Vietnam. This segment encompasses diverse customer groups: first-time car buyers, young families, and more.

1. Toyota Vios: 540 - 624 million VND

The Toyota Vios is one of the few models that consistently holds a leading position in the B-segment sedan market. Its strong sales are partly attributed to the Toyota brand, which is highly regarded by consumers, and partly supported by taxi services.

The current generation Vios is the new generation introduced in Vietnam in early 2014. The Vios has dimensions of Length x Width x Height of 4,410 x 1,700 x 1,475 (mm) and a wheelbase of 2,550 mm. The 2014 Vios has a more attractive appearance, consistent with its two older siblings, the Altis and Camry, featuring a large air intake extending from the middle of the front of the car down to the lower bumper, along with embossed lines that sweep around the body.

Available in three versions – 1.3J, 1.5E, and 1.5G – the Vios' interior and options differ. The G and J versions feature a glossy black interior, while the E version uses an ivory color. The 1.5G version has leather seats, automatic climate control, and power-adjustable seats. All three versions are equipped with a CD player, but the 1.5G has a 6-speaker sound system, while the 1.5E and 1.5J only have a 4-speaker system.

In terms of engines, the Toyota Vios still uses the same engines as the previous generation, including two versions: a 1.5L engine producing a maximum power of 107 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a torque of 141 Nm at 4,200 rpm, paired with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission; and a 1.3L engine producing 84 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 121 Nm at 4,400 rpm. Safety features are basic, including ABS brakes, emergency brake assist (BA), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), and airbags for the front seats.

Currently, the selling price of the Toyota Vios is 624 million VND for the 1.5G version, 577 million VND for the 1.5E version, and 540 million VND for the 1.3J version.

2. Hyundai Avante: 532 - 575 million VND

Although priced similarly to other B-segment models, the Avante belongs to the C-segment sedan category, meaning it has advantages in size and better features compared to the Vios and City.

Hyundai Avante là một trong những lựa chọn hàng đầu cho người thực dụng
The Hyundai Avante is one of the top choices for practical people.

The Hyundai Avante boasts a rather attractive appearance with LED daytime running lights, a feature mostly found in high-end models and not yet common in mainstream models. The body retains the modern, flowing lines from the front, and the raised rear end provides ample luggage space. The car has dimensions of 4,505 x 1,775 x 1,490 (mm) (Length x Width x Height) and a wheelbase of 2,650 (mm).

Despite being considered a budget-friendly C-segment car, the Avante's interior is still quite good, featuring light-colored leather upholstery that enhances the feeling of luxury, a dashboard made of hard plastic with a design focused on simplicity and practicality, and a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminum accents that add a touch of style, integrating audio system controls to increase the car's utility.

A significant plus is the option of an electrically adjustable sunroof, a feature that is currently quite popular among customers. The in-car entertainment system includes a 6-disc CD changer, MP3 player, AUX input, radio, and six speakers strategically placed around the vehicle, providing fairly good sound quality.

The Avante is currently equipped with a 1.6L gasoline engine producing 121 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 156 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm, paired with either a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission.

According to the manufacturer, the Avante has fairly good fuel consumption, specifically 6.3L/100km for the 1.6MT version and 6.7L/100km for the 1.6AT version. Interestingly, the Avante holds its value very well in the market, with depreciation after each year of use being only around 20 million VND, a very impressive figure comparable to cars known for their good resale value, such as the Toyota Vios.

Currently, the Hyundai Avante is available on the market in two versions: the 1.6MT priced at 532 million VND and the 1.6 AT priced at 575 million VND.

3. Honda City: 552 - 599 million VND

The 2014 Honda City is the latest version introduced to Vietnamese consumers, following the launch of the previous generation a year earlier. The car is sold in two versions, priced at 552 million VND for the 1.5MT version and 599 million VND for the 1.5 CVT version.

The 2014 Honda City adopts the "sturdy wings" design philosophy, resulting in a sportier and more modern look with a large chrome grille seamlessly connected to the headlights. The body features continuous embossed lines. The car is equipped with electrically adjustable rearview mirrors with integrated turn signals and chrome door handles on the CVT version. The manual transmission version has 15-inch steel wheels, while the CVT version has 16-inch alloy wheels. The rear features new taillights that wrap around the rear of the car, combined with a glossy chrome strip.

The 2015 Honda City has overall dimensions of 4,455 x 1,694 x 1,487 mm (length x width x height), with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The interior is simple, equipped only with fabric seats and a basic entertainment system for both versions. The manual transmission version also lacks rear air vents.

The car uses a 1.5L I4 engine producing 118 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and a maximum torque of 145 Nm at 4,600 rpm, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT continuously variable transmission. The 1.5L CVT version also features an Eco Mode for fuel efficiency. Safety features include ABS anti-lock braking system, EBD electronic brake force distribution, front airbags, shock-absorbing headrests, and an anti-theft system. The front wheels use disc brakes, while the rear wheels use drum brakes.

• Conclude

It can be said that the 500-600 million VND price segment offers consumers a relatively wide and diverse range of choices. For customers who are relatively conservative and prioritize reliability and durability, the Vios is an indispensable choice. For those with a more individualistic personality and a passion for driving, the Honda City is a great option. And for practical customers who value the practical benefits a car provides, the Hyundai Avante is the optimal choice.
