Toyota recalls 1.61 million vehicles in Japan due to airbag inflator defect

On November 25, Japanese auto manufacturer Toyota announced its decision to recall 1.61 million vehicles sold in Japan due to faulty airbag inflators manufactured by Takata.

Toyota issued the latest recall after an airbag inflator in a Nissan Motor Co. sport utility vehicle unexpectedly ruptured and injured a passenger last October.

An investigation into the airbag inflator was conducted in August but did not find any malfunction that could have led to the defect.

Toyota said it has notified Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of the recall of 1,612,670 vehicles manufactured between 2004 and 2008, including Vitz and Corolla passenger cars.

Since 2008, car manufacturers have been recalling tens of millions of vehicles worldwide due to concerns that airbag inflators manufactured by Takata could explode when activated and shoot metal fragments at people in the car./.
