After two double recalls last March, Toyota Vietnam continued to announce two similar recalls related to airbag errors with a total of 11,718 vehicles.

On August 10, the Vietnam Register approved two parallel recalls for Toyota Vietnam Automobile Company. Accordingly, both recalls are related to airbag defects.

The first recall involves airbags made by Takata. Toyota says the airbags have a “risk of moisture intrusion over time” and that in the event of an accident, “the inflator assembly may rupture,” which could allow “metal fragments of the inflator to be propelled through the inflated airbag, posing a risk of serious injury to the occupants.”

Toyota Vietnam continues to recall more than 11,000 vehicles with defective Takata airbags.

This recall applies to a total of 11,346 vehicles manufactured and imported by Toyota Vietnam between January 2, 2013 and December 31, 2013. Of these, there are 5,666 Corolla vehicles, 5,130 Vios vehicles, and 550 Yaris vehicles.

This is the fifth time since 2015 that Toyota Vietnam has had to recall vehicles with faulty Takata airbags. And up to now, Toyota Vietnam has recalled about 54,000 vehicles related to this defect. Previously, according to the notice sent to the Vietnam Register, the number of Toyota vehicles using Takata airbags was more than 71,000.

In addition, the Japanese car company also announced a recall of 372 Toyota Corolla cars manufactured between December 16, 2015 and February 15, 2016.to test and replace airbag sensor.

Toyota Vietnam announced that this is a "production line error" that causes "the insulating layer of the processing chip (IC chip) in the airbag sensor to peel off after a period of use, causing an open circuit inside the processing chip." Accordingly, this error "will cause the airbag warning light to turn on on the dashboard" and in the event of an accident or collision, "the airbag may not be activated and the airbag will become ineffective."

Both recalls will begin on August 10, 2018. Toyota Vietnam will "check and replace the airbag inflator assembly" or "damaged airbag sensor" for all affected vehicles at all Toyota Dealers/Dealer Branches nationwide, free of charge.

Last March, the automaker also announced a similar dual recall of nearly 17,000 Corolla Altis vehicles with defective Takata airbags and about 3,500 Toyota and Lexus vehicles with IC defects that prevented airbags from deploying.
