Specifically, with the first recall program, TMV recalled 16,964 Corolla cars manufactured in Vietnam between January 4, 2010 and December 29, 2012 to inspect and replace the front passenger airbag inflator assembly with defective Takata airbags.

According to TMV's explanation, in affected vehicles, the airbag inflator assembly (supplied by Takata) may be manufactured with the risk of moisture intrusion over time.

In the event of a vehicle accident and the airbag system is activated, depending on the circumstances, the release of inert gas may create excessive pressure within the inflator assembly and result in the possibility of the inflator assembly rupturing.

In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments of the inflator could be propelled through the inflated airbag, posing a risk of serious injury to occupants in a crash.

The remaining recall is to inspect and replace airbag sensors on a total of 3,526 Toyota and Lexus vehicles to inspect and replace airbag sensors on affected vehicles.

Specifically, with 2,043 Corolla cars; 1,182 IMV HILUX cars, 46 Lexus NX 200t cars; 254 Lexus RX 350 cars and 1 Toyota Prius.

According to TMV, due to a manufacturing error, the insulating layer of the processing chip (IC chip) inside the airbag sensor may peel off after a period of use, causing an open circuit inside the processing chip, causing the front or side airbag sensor to not function properly.

For affected vehicles, when the airbag sensor fails, the airbag warning light will come on on the dashboard. In the event of a collision, the airbag may not be activated and the airbag will not be effective.

TMV said that both recalls will begin on the same day, March 22, 2018.

TMV will inspect and replace defective parts completely free of charge for all affected vehicles at all TMV dealers/dealer branches nationwide from March 22, 2018.

Inspection and replacement time is approximately 1 to 3 hours for vehicles with passenger airbag inflator replacement. Vehicles included in the second recall have inspection and replacement time of approximately 30 minutes to 7 hours.
