Toyota Vietnam recalls more than 20,000 cars to fix airbags

More than 20,000 Vios and Yaris cars manufactured between 2009 and 2012 are being recalled to replace airbag inflators manufactured by Takata.

Toyota Vietnam said it will recall 18,138 domestically assembled Vios cars (from January 5, 2009 to December 29, 2012) and 1,877 imported Yaris cars (from September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2012) with defective airbag inflators supplied by Takata from August 28, 2012.

Vios sản xuất khoảng 2009-2012 trong diện triệu hồi.
Vios produced around 2009-2012 are subject to recall.

These vehicles have the same defect as tens of millions of vehicles worldwide in the Takata crisis. Accordingly, Takata uses ammonium nitrate compound
(NH4NO3) decomposes to create inert gas to inflate airbags in an accident. But
The front passenger airbag inflator assembly is at risk of moisture intrusion, causing an unintended decomposition of ammonium nitrate. The high pressure of the decomposition causes the inflator assembly to rupture, metal fragments to fly through the airbag, causing injury to the passenger.

Toyota Vietnam will check and replace this part free of charge for customers, the repair time is about 0.5-3 hours depending on the vehicle type. The company has not recorded any accidents related to this airbag error in Vietnam.

Other Toyota vehicles equipped with airbags from suppliers other than Takata are not included in the recall.

Previously in 2015, Toyota recalled Corolla and Vios to fix airbag errors. In 2016, Honda Vietnam also recalled more than 10,000 cars due to this error.
