"Rehearsals for the Victory Day parade will be postponed to another day," a source at the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet said today, without revealing the new schedule.
The Russian military is rehearsing for a military parade in major cities, including Vladivostok, in preparation for the Victory Day parade on May 9. The rehearsal is scheduled to take place in Vladivostok tonight, with many major streets closed to the public so soldiers can line up. The decision to postpone the rehearsal will help the city authorities prepare for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un when he arrives at 6 p.m.
Kim Jong-un's armored train crossed the Russian-North Korean border this morning and stopped at Khasan, where a memorial house built in 1986 during the visit of late leader Kim Il-sung to the Soviet Union is located. After leaving Khasan station, the train headed to the city of Ussuriysk and transferred to the Trans-Siberian Railway to Vladivostok.
The Kremlin previously announced that the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will be held on April 25 in the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.
This is the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries in eight years, since the late leader Kim Jong-il met Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in 2011, when Medvedev was president of Russia. The meeting also marks Kim Jong-un's first foreign trip since the second US-North Korea summit in Hanoi in February, where the two sides failed to reach any agreement.
During his trip to Russia, the North Korean leader may visit the Pacific Fleet base, food factories and an aquarium in Vladivostok city on April 26, after the summit ends.
