China's anti-corruption agency said a Uyghur official in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is under investigation for suspected serious disciplinary violations.

According to Reuters, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of China only briefly stated in its news release that the person disciplined was Alimjan Maimaitiming, 55, who held the position of secretary of a local government.

According to his biography, he hails from Cherchen (Qiemo), a region deep in southern Xinjiang. He was formerly the editor-in-chief of the Xinjiang Daily.

Since taking power in 2012, President Xi Jinping has declared war on corruption in China.

This campaign was carried out extensively and vigorously in many provinces and cities across China, but was less pronounced in autonomous regions.

Last year, a mayor of Hotan – a province deep in southern Xinjiang – was also investigated for accepting bribes.
