Green tea has a powerful effect on your mood.
Green tea has many health benefits and can make you happier.
Previous studies have shown positive effects of green tea, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Okinawans, Japan, have lower rates of cancer, heart disease and dementia than Americans, and women there live longer than anywhere else on the planet. Many believe the Okinawan diet contributes to their longevity, with jasmine tea being a popular drink there.
Additionally, scientists say, green tea can improve mood.

“The bioactives in green tea help the mind stay focused and relaxed. It is no exaggeration to say that this tea contributes to the happiness of the people of Okinawa. Locals often enjoy jasmine-infused green tea,” said Maggie Moon, brain health nutritionist and bestselling author ofMIND Diet, tellWell + Good.
The main components of green tea include caffeine, theanine, arginine, and EGCG, explains Moon, of which EGCG is the most active and most studied phytochemical.
The combination of these bioactive ingredients can enhance mood during the day and long term as well as have anti-inflammatory, longevity potential.
A 2018 study found that people who consumed at least three cups of green tea per week had a 21% lower risk of depression than those who did not.
“Green tea is culturally associated with moments of stillness. The caffeine and L-theanine combine to create a calm, yet alert state of mind,” explains Moon. The lower caffeine content of green tea compared to coffee means less jitteriness, while the L-theanine reduces stress.
Combining stimulants with amino acids has been shown to reduce anxiety, improve brain function, and enhance memory and attention, according to a 2017 review. Green tea’s anti-inflammatory properties are another reason to enjoy a cup. A 2023 meta-analysis found that people who followed an anti-inflammatory diet had a 29% lower risk of depression.
Flavonoids in green tea promote the growth of new brain cells and keep existing brain cells healthy. Flavonoids suppress inflammation in the brain and counteract the negative effects of stress.
You can reap the benefits of green tea whether you drink it a few times a week or a few times a day. If you drink it daily, be aware that too much caffeine can cause restlessness and insomnia at night.
However, according toNew York Post, a study in October 2023 found that adults who consumed more caffeinated beverages had significantly better physical health.
“Coffee and tea are staple beverages in many parts of the world, including Singapore. Our study suggests that consuming caffeinated beverages in midlife may reduce the risk of physical decline in old age,” said Professor Koh Woon Puay (National University of Singapore), who led the study.
