In addition to the ability to crawl sideways like a crab, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric car equipped with the experimental e-Corner system can also turn around in place, rotate like a compass, and go diagonally.

Like Toyota, Hyundai did not directly participate in CES 2023 but instead had its component manufacturing branch present. Called Hyundai Mobis (MObility Beyond Integrated Solution), this branch not only produces components and spare parts for the company's vehicle lines but is also responsible for developing technologies for the entire Hyundai Group. And at CES 2023, Hyundai Mobis demonstrated its technical potential through the e-Corner steering system installed on the IONIQ 5 electric vehicle.

The e-Corner System is designed to significantly increase the mobility of electric vehicles, allowing them to move in multiple directions with ease. When equipped with this system, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric vehicle tested not only crawled sideways like a crab, but also turned in place, turned like a compass, and drove diagonally. According to the company, the e-Corner system is designed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

The e-Corner features an in-wheel motor design that integrates electronic braking and steering technology as well as electric suspension into a single package. This means that the system can be fitted to cars without the need for a wheel-driven internal combustion engine, conventional chassis design or even a steering column.

Each wheel can accelerate, brake and steer independently, allowing true four-wheel drive to adapt to a wide range of vehicles – from SUVs to mid-size and compact cars.
