Equipping tablets for Su-30MK2 pilots

Using tablets as a support tool for civilian pilots is nothing new, but it's different for fighter pilots.

China's Sina website has just posted a series of photos recording Su-30MK2 fighter pilots of the Indonesian Air Force using tablets as a support tool during their work.

The British manufacturer Inzpire said on December 5 that the Indonesian Air Force has put into service a graphical electronic mission planning system (GECO) for fighter pilots and flight instructors on the Su-30MK2 multirole fighter.

This system is a tablet that is fixed to the pilot's knee, which means that flight parameters will be displayed directly on it, helping pilots eliminate the need to look at complicated screens or clocks and also avoid being dependent on cumbersome paper maps.

The advantage of tablets over traditional maps is undeniable. If using a map, the pilot will have to scan several times at a slow speed, determine coordinates relatively, and the accuracy is not high.

Meanwhile, thanks to the GECO system, the above operation is very simple, just touch the screen and operate, all parameters will be displayed fully at high speed, the pilot can also easily zoom in or out to observe in the best way.

In addition, thanks to the combat network connection, GECO will bring better coordination between aircraft in the formation, avoiding stepping on each other's toes when performing missions, and also helping to cross-check to come up with the best solution. In addition, it also has the function of saving history and marking targets on the flight path.

The GECO graphical electronic mission planning system is a unique innovation for Su-30MK2 fighter pilots.

However, there are still some concerns such as whether attaching the tablet to the pilot's knee will make them feel uncomfortable while operating, or when having to bear high loads when the plane performs complex aerobatics, will the device pop out?

But the manufacturer reassured that the GECO belt is designed with high durability, even has a "self-untying" mechanism if it encounters adverse conditions that are too much, very safe for the pilot.

The above approach of the Indonesian Air Force could be a good option for other forces that are also using Russian-made Su-27/30 Flanker fighters.
