After a long period of research and successful artificial breeding of catfish, the Phuong Loan fish farm of Mr. Tran Duc Phuong's family in Hamlet 6, Van Hoi Commune, Tran Yen District, Yen Bai Province, has now successfully produced catfish fingerlings to supply the market.

This is a great success for Mr. Phuong's family because, currently in Northern Vietnam, only the Research Institute for Aquaculture 1 located in Bac Ninh province produces this fish species. Mr. Phuong's family is the first private farm in the North to successfully breed and produce this fish species.

The artificial insemination and hatching facility for catfish fingerlings of Phuong Loan enterprise.

Mr. Phuong's family started raising catfish commercially in June 2011 with nearly 4,000 fish. During the care process, Mr. Phuong discovered baby catfish in the pond and concluded that, because the water supply and drainage system for the pond closely resembled the natural environment of rivers and streams, the catfish had reproduced.

Based on that experience, in 2012, Mr. Phuong's family began hiring aquaculture engineers to artificially inseminate their catfish. After the female catfish were injected with ovulation-stimulating drugs and artificially inseminated, the eggs were placed in incubation tanks. The next day, many eggs hatched into catfish fry. However, the hatching rate remained low, only about 20-30%, due to the inability to control ambient temperature, water temperature, light, etc.

Since the beginning of this year, Mr. Phuong's family has continued to invest in building a specialized facility for catfish spawning, constructing water pipes, pressurized water tanks, nursery tanks, and a cooling and temperature control system for air, water, and light... aiming to create a natural environment for the fish to spawn and fertilize successfully. As a result, Mr. Phuong's family has successfully spawned catfish many times and has produced tens of thousands of fingerlings for farming and sale on the market.

Catfish are a valuable species of smooth-skinned fish. In nutrition, catfish are considered a prized food source rich in protein, essential minerals, and almost all types of vitamins, making them very beneficial to human health. In some cases, eating catfish can even help prevent atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. Currently, in the Yen Bai market, naturally farmed catfish are sold at prices ranging from 500,000 to 600,000 VND per kilogram.
