Taylor Corso posted a photo of an American Kate Spade handbag on Twitter on October 4 and immediately received mixed reviews about its color. According to an online poll on the Telegraph with more than 10,000 votes, 95% of them thought it was white, while the remaining 5% saw it as blue.

According to the Kate Spade catalog, the bag's official color is "mystic blue." It's also described as having the color of a lake.

"The actual color is a blue-gray, but I don't think that's the color Kate Spade described," the bag's owner said on October 5. She also explained the bag's true color on Twitter, but few people believed her.

Last year, social media users also argued online about the color of a dress, with two opinions saying it was white and gold and blue and black.

David Williams, a vision scientist at the University of Rochester, explains why. He says light is made up of different wavelengths, and the brain perceives them as colors. Light enters the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye, and activates cone cells that are sensitive to red, green, or blue wavelengths. However, the wavelength your eye detects may not be the wavelength of the object you are looking at.

Williams suggests that each person's brain may have different assumptions about how an object is illuminated. So if each person's brain assumes that light hits an object in different ways, it will decode it as different colors.
