(Baonghean.vn) - On December 11th, in Kim Lien commune (Nam Dan district), the "Trans-Vietnam Cycling Race - 2014, Vietnam National Defense Cup" concluded its 8th stage, covering a 60km route from Ha Tinh City to the Kim Lien intersection (National Highway 46 and Provincial Road 540).

After the athletes finished the race, the Organizing Committee held a ceremony to offer incense in commemoration of President Ho Chi Minh at the Kim Lien historical site and awarded prizes to the athletes who achieved the best results in the stage. Attending the ceremony were Major General Pham Van Huan – Editor-in-Chief of the Vietnam People's Army Newspaper and Head of the race organizing committee, along with representatives from the 4th Military Region and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The "Trans-Vietnam Cycling Race – 2014, Vietnam National Defense Cup," organized by the People's Army Newspaper in coordination with the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation, is a practical activity commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army and the 25th anniversary of the National Defense Day. This is the first trans-Vietnam cycling race starting from Ca Mau – the southernmost province of the country – and traveling along the length of the country to Cao Bang province, the northernmost province, with 12 stages and a total distance of 1,292 km.

The race took place over 15 days, from December 2nd to 16th, with the participation of 85 athletes from 17 delegations, including two international delegations from Laos and Cambodia. At each stop, the racing team organized exchanges, presented gifts to families of policy beneficiaries, and gave gifts to the children of officers and soldiers serving in border areas, islands, and remote regions.

At the end of stage 8, the first prize went to Tran Van Quyen (Army Team 1), the second prize to athlete Nguyen Thanh Tam (An Giang Pearl Rice), and the third prize to athlete Le Nguyet Minh (Ho Chi Minh City).

On this occasion, the organizing committee presented gifts to 10 families of policy beneficiaries and military families in difficult circumstances, awarded 5 "Comradeship" scholarships to students who are children of officers and soldiers serving in border and island areas in Nam Dan district; and visited and presented gifts to one exemplary policy beneficiary family in Vinh City.
