Google's artificial intelligence can detect cancer

With recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, Google has been working to apply AI to the medical and healthcare fields.

Lily Peng, product manager for the medical research team at Google Research, shared how the US tech giant is using deep learning algorithms to analyze medical images and automatically detect signs of disease, such as swollen blood vessels in the eyes or cancerous tumors.

Based on the workings of the human brain, deep learning algorithms use large artificial neural networks to reorganize new information, allowing computers to learn on their own without human programming.

On the medical front, Google has made significant progress in building an algorithm that reads retinal images to help distinguish signs of diabetic retinopathy, one of the fastest growing causes of blindness. Google has designed an AI algorithm to analyze retinal images and identify features of diabetic retinopathy.

Another area where Google’s AI technology is being heavily used is cancer detection. The tech giant is developing another deep learning algorithm to examine biopsy images to determine where metastatic breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

"What we're trying to do is find out where the breast cancer is in the lymph nodes, which helps determine the patient's cancer stage and guide treatment," Lily Peng shared.

It will be some time before devices running Google’s deep learning algorithms are commercialized for use in the medical industry, the Google researcher said, because it must secure enough clinical data to demonstrate effectiveness and accuracy before seeking regulatory approval.
