Ray Kurzweil, Google's director of engineering, predicts that the AI singularity will occur in 2029 and humans will merge with machines a few years later, Express reported on March 18. The AI singularity is the point when machines are on par with humans in terms of intelligence.
"By 2029, machines will have human-like intelligence. We can put machines inside our brains, connect them to the data cloud and extend our intelligence," Kurzweil said at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, USA.
Kurzweil also stressed that the prospect of AI enslaving humans has no basis in reality. According to him, the purpose of AI is to benefit humans, not to surpass them. Merging with machines in the future could help humans improve their capabilities significantly.
"What's happening is that machines are empowering all of us. They're making us smarter. They're not inside our bodies yet, but by the 2030s we'll be connecting the neocortex, the part of the brain responsible for language and consciousness, to the data cloud," Kurzweil said.
