The prospect of reishi mushroom in treating obesity

Research by Taiwanese (Chinese) scientists shows the ability of reishi mushrooms to treat obesity and obesity-related diseases, at least in mice.

In a new experiment published in the journal Nature Communications, the research team demonstrated the ability of reishi mushrooms (scientific name Ganoderma lucidum) to help regulate harmful microbial mixes, while enhancing the protective effects of beneficial bacteria residing in the intestines of obese mice due to a high-fat diet.

These beneficial bacteria prevent the leakage of harmful bacteria's toxins through the intestinal wall. Scientists found that mice fed a high-fat diet that were given a solution containing reishi mushroom extract for two weeks had increased numbers of protective bacteria in the intestinal wall and lower levels of inflammation in their blood compared to the control group.

In contrast, mice that did not consume reishi mushrooms were obese, insulin resistant, had high levels of inflammation, and had a lot of fat accumulated under the skin and in their internal organs. The group of mice that ate a high-fat diet but were treated with the highest dose (a solution containing 8% reishi mushroom extract) had the same body weight as mice that ate normally and much lower than mice that ate a high-fat diet but were not treated./.
