Authorities successfully dismantled an inter-provincial motorcycle theft ring.
(Baonghean.vn) -After more than two months of establishing a special investigation case 138X, the Tan Ky District Police successfully dismantled an inter-provincial motorcycle theft and resale ring operating from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh provinces. The ring was extremely sophisticated, audacious, and involved a large number of motorcycles.
In late 2012 and January 2013, Tan Ky district experienced a series of motorcycle thefts. Taking advantage of owners' negligence in managing their property, thieves broke into crowded areas such as weddings, along roads, and in offices and factories, stealing expensive motorcycles like Exciter, Air Blade, Sirius, and Jupiter. Faced with the audacity and sophistication of this type of crime, under the direction of the Tan Ky District Police leadership, Special Task Force 138X was established to combat and dismantle the group responsible for these motorcycle thefts.
Through screening and verification to clarify the number of individuals involved in the theft, after nearly two months of determined investigation, the special task force identified two groups of suspects with many suspicious behaviors. A plan to monitor all movements of these individuals was immediately implemented.
At approximately 7:30 PM on December 22, 2012, Le Van Dinh (born in 1992) and Ha Van Thinh (born in 1993), both residing in Hung Cuong 1 hamlet, Ky Son commune, Tan Ky district, prepared a lock-picking tool and infiltrated a wedding in Nghia Phuc commune to steal a motorbike. On the way, the two noticed several motorbikes parked unattended in front of a restaurant in Tan Thanh hamlet, Tan An commune. Seeing the motorbikes left unattended, Dinh started the engine and waited, while Thinh pretended to hold a phone to his ear with one hand and used the lock-picking tool with the other, approaching the target – a brand-new Sirius motorbike belonging to Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, a teacher at Tan Ky 3 High School.
In an instant, the car was unlocked and "vanished." However, the actions of the two suspects did not escape the notice of the police. While Thinh and Dinh were driving on the road, they were ambushed and pursued by a task force from Tan Ky District Police. The two suspects abandoned the car and fled, with Ha Van Thinh escaping from the area. Without immediately alerting the suspects, the police proceeded to gather evidence. On December 24th, based on the evidence, the special task force issued an urgent arrest warrant for Ha Van Thinh while he was hiding at his uncle's house in Nam Cuong commune. At the same time, Le Van Dinh was also arrested at his home.
At the police station, during questioning, the two suspects, Le Van Dinh and Ha Van Thinh, confessed to successfully carrying out 6 robberies. The police also recovered 3 motorcycles.
The second group of suspects targeted by investigators was a gang specializing in stealing motorcycles from businesses and offices. Their targets were expensive motorcycles. From this, detectives uncovered an inter-provincial motorcycle theft and resale ring operating from Thanh Hoa to Ha Tinh, characterized by its large scale, tight organization, and sophisticated, audacious operations. The ringleader was Dang Van Tien (born 1982), residing in Nghia Phuc commune, Tan Ky district. An arrest warrant was issued for Dang Van Tien immediately after he and his accomplices stole an Airblade motorcycle belonging to Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong, Director of the Agricultural Bank of Tan Ky district. In this theft, Tien and his accomplices had carefully observed the bank's routines and routes. Knowing that the bank had security guards but the parking garage was located at the back where the guards were rarely present, Tien broke in and brazenly stole the motorcycle without being detected.
The suspect, Dang Van Tien, along with the stolen items from the thefts.
During questioning, Tien confessed to having successfully carried out over 10 motorcycle thefts with his accomplices. After stealing motorcycles in Nghe An province, they transported them to Ha Tinh province for sale, then stole more in Ha Tinh and transported them to Thanh Hoa province for resale, and finally stole more in Thanh Hoa and brought them back to Nghe An to sell to people in mountainous districts to evade police investigation. Tien, a repeat offender with a prior conviction for theft, had just been released from prison in 2011 and had established connections with accomplices scattered across various provinces, making investigation and prosecution extremely difficult for the police.
Currently, the police force has recovered 6 motorcycles and is continuing to arrest the remaining suspects in this large-scale motorcycle theft and resale ring, contributing to stabilizing the situation so that people can enjoy the Lunar New Year holiday with peace of mind.
