The Japanese automaker has just announced a recall of 166 vehicles in the Vietnamese market due to a faulty front passenger airbag inflator.

The recall affects 166 vehicles, including 10 Sunny compact sedans, 122 X-Trail 5-seater SUVs, 27 Patrol 7-seater SUVs, and 7 Navara pickup trucks. All of these vehicles were manufactured between February 2, 2005, and March 9, 2007.

Airbags are safety devices equipped in cars to minimize the risks of accidents involving people or to reduce head, neck, chest, and facial injuries to the driver and passengers in the event of a frontal collision.

In terms of operation, when a sufficiently strong collision occurs, the control unit receives a signal and supplies electricity to detonate the airbag. The inflator then generates gas to create an air cushion, preventing certain parts of the passenger's body from directly colliding with the vehicle's hard surfaces. Afterward, the airbag automatically deflates to prevent trapping the passenger inside the vehicle.

According to information from the Vietnam Register (Ministry of Transport), the airbag inflator unit may malfunction due to humid weather conditions during use, potentially leading to the airbag not deploying properly, specifically failing to deploy in the event of a collision.

To prevent unnecessary injuries to passengers in the event of an accident due to the airbags failing to deploy, vehicles subject to the recall must be brought to an authorized Nissan dealership for inspection and replacement.

For Nissan vehicles manufactured and imported into the Vietnamese market that are subject to recall as announced by Nissan Japan, Nissan Vietnam is ready to assist, inspect, and replace parts free of charge under the recall program if requested by the corporation.

Nissan Vietnam is expected to carry out the recall and repair program between August 17, 2015 and January 18, 2016.
