According to the South Korean Ministry of Defense, on May 18, North Korea launched three short-range guided missiles towards the area off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it appeared to be part of a military exercise. "North Korea launched two guided missiles in the morning and one in the afternoon," a Defense Ministry official told AFP.

"These missiles fell into the East Sea (Sea of Japan)," he said.

He added that South Korea remains highly vigilant regarding the North and is in a state of high readiness to respond to any potential risks.

It is known that North Korea occasionally fires short-range missiles for testing or as part of military exercises.

The aforementioned missile launches followed a joint naval exercise between South Korea and the United States this week, which Pyongyang viewed as a provocation and preparation for war.

Kyodo, citing Japanese officials, confirmed that North Korea launched three short-range missiles, but stated that Pyongyang's missiles did not fall into Japanese territorial waters.
