(Baonghean.vn) - According to Yonhap on April 24, North Korea has dismissed Mr. Kim Yong-chol, a close aide to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and counterpart of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, citing the country's officials.

Mr. Kim Yong-chol is the Head of the United Front Department of North Korea and an important figure in the relationship between North Korea, South Korea and the United States.

Yonhap did not give a specific reason for the removal of Kim Yong-chol.

Kim Yong-chol is the North Korean leader’s right-hand man. He played a prominent role in the second US-North Korea Summit held in Hanoi at the end of February. He had a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House in January.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea has yet to confirm this information.

News of Kim Yong-chol's removal from office emerged after the North Korean Foreign Ministry announced last week that it wanted to remove US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo from nuclear negotiations.

Kim Jong-un has warned that the failure of the talks in Vietnam risks increasing tensions, and has expressed his willingness to continue negotiations if the US side can come up with an agreement with “fair and mutually acceptable” terms before the end of this year.
