North Korea warns South Korea of "ultimate destruction"
On February 19, North Korea warned that South Korea would face "the final blow" if Seoul and its allies continued to push for tougher sanctions resolutions against Pyongyang's nuclear program.
Speaking at the UN Conference on Disarmament, North Korean envoy Jon Yong Ryong said: "We will never recognize the propaganda resolutions on sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council. South Korea's erratic behavior may only lead them to face ultimate destruction."
North Korea and South Korea have consistently engaged in heated exchanges at the UN forum, which meets regularly in Geneva and focuses on a range of global arms control issues.
But following Pyongyang's nuclear test last week and widespread international condemnation, statements from both sides have become more tense.
South Korean Ambassador Kwon Haeryong countered by saying that the Pyongyang regime would be better off ensuring a better life for the people who have been starving for the past two decades.
"Everyone knows that North Korea uses enormous resources to develop nuclear weapons and missiles. It's regrettable that chronic food shortages persist and continue to threaten the people," he said.
Following North Korea's statement, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Laura E. Kennedy described it as "provocative."
