North Korea threatens retaliation for South Korea's artillery fire near Yonphyong Island
North Korea's official news agency KCNA said on June 26 that the North strongly condemned South Korea's shelling near its border and declared that the Korean People's Army (KPA) is ready to strike back.
The KPA's Southwestern Front Command issued a statement saying South Korean military "warmongers" shelled North Korean waters around Yonphyong Island "without prior notice".

The statement called the incident a "reckless provocation" and said the South Korean military had repeatedly shelled Paekryong, Yonphyong, Taechong and other islands and escalated tensions at the flashpoint by blocking North Korean fishing boats.
According to the statement, all KPA strike teams in the Southwestern Front have been prepared for fierce attacks and "are only waiting for orders from the Supreme Command"./.
