North Korea explains why it shot dead a South Korean official at sea
North Korean media reported today (October 30) that the country shot dead a South Korean fisheries official at sea as a self-defense measure due to fear of the spread of the Corona virus.
South Korean ArmyNorth Korean soldiers shot dead a fisheries official, Seoul has called for a joint investigation.
North Korea's KCNA news agency reported that South Korea was responsible for the death of the 47-year-old official.
“To put it bluntly, the unfortunate incident that occurred in the western waters of the Korean Peninsula was the result of South Korea’s inappropriate citizen control in the sensitive area. The incident occurred at a time when tensions and threats were high as the Covid-19 pandemic was sweeping across South Korea… Therefore, the first fault lies with the South Korean side.”
“North Korean soldiers could not help but take self-defense measures when witnessing South Korean citizens illegally entering waters under Pyongyang’s control.”
North Korea said it had tried its best to find the body of the South Korean citizen but to no avail. KCNA also wrote,Pyongyangdo not want to see such incidents happen again, making North-South relations hotter.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un also apologized days after the incident, claiming it was to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
The South Korean military said the official was planning to defect to North Korea when he was reported missing from a patrol boat south of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), which is considered the maritime border between South and North Korea.
