As US President Donald Trump embarked on his first trip to Asia, starting with Japan, North Korea announced it would not negotiate with the US on denuclearization and threatened to increase its nuclear arsenal.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in a commentary on November 4, Pyongyang said that the US should immediately discard the “absurd idea” that the country would succumb to international sanctions and give up its nuclear weapons. North Korea also emphasized that it is “in the final stage of completing nuclear weapons.”

In the commentary titled “Stop Daydreaming,” the author wrote: “Stop daydreaming about denuclearization talks with us. Our self-defense nuclear treasure sword will be sharpened further if the US hostile policy toward the DPRK does not end.”

President Trump has arrived in Japan, amid tensions on the Korean Peninsula over recent nuclear and missile tests that show no signs of abating.

President Trump will travel to South Korea on November 7 but is not expected to visit the demilitarized zone (DMZ) on the inter-Korean border.

The White House announced that President Trump will deliver a speech to the South Korean National Assembly, urging “a solution to a common threat.”

However, some South Koreans are concerned that President Trump's visit could worsen the situation if the US leader fails to restrain his aggressive attitude towards Pyongyang.

Previously, in recent months, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have engaged in fierce verbal battles, threatening to attack each other and bringing with it the risk of military conflict.

“Because President Trump often makes unscripted statements, many South Koreans worry that he will lose control,” said Professor Yang Moo-jin, who teaches at the University of North Korean Studies.
