Kim Won Hong, 72, was removed from his post as head of North Korea's intelligence agency in mid-January for corruption, abuse of power and human rights violations.

The 72-year-old politician is one of the most powerful officials in North Korea and was appointed Minister of State Security in April 2012.

Information about Kim Won Hong's dismissal was announced by Jeong Joon He, spokesman for the Korean Ministry of Unification, on February 3.

Seoul authorities accuse Kim Jong Un of carrying out numerous purges and executions of high-ranking officials in Pyongyang's government apparatus since becoming leader of North Korea in 2011 after the death of Kim Jong Il.
