Will President Kim Jong-un's decision to sit down at the negotiating table with the US open up a new direction for resolving the recent nuclear conflict between the US and North Korea? In the photo, North Korean President Kim Jong-un is inspecting a military base. |
Accordingly, Ms. Choe Son-hui, an official of the North Korean Foreign Ministry responsible for North American affairs, informed reporters in Beijing that bilateral talks between Pyongyang and Washington would be considered.
"Bilateral talks between Pyongyang and Washington will be considered. However, that will only happen if the conditions are right!", Ms. Choe said.
The new statement from the North Korean government comes amid escalating tensions between the US and North Korea. In the past few months, North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests, despite UN objections and harsh criticism from the US.
US President Donald Trump has previously said he wants to resolve the North Korean crisis through diplomacy, but he has also said that a "major, major conflict" is entirely possible.
At the same time, Mr. Trump also said that he would be honored to meet and work with North Korean President Kim Jong-un, as long as the terms and conditions are guaranteed. However, up to now, those terms are still a mystery.
