North Korea now possesses up to 1,000 drones, which are used for reconnaissance or to carry out attacks, a South Korean state organization has revealed.

DailyMail quoted a report by Chung Ku-youn, a researcher at the Korea Institute for National Unification, saying that Pyongyang is focusing on developing drones to supplement the country's weak air force as well as enhance its reconnaissance capabilities.

The report also said that North Korea's air force is weaker than South Korea's. In addition, North Korea's lack of military satellites makes it difficult for Pyongyang to spy on Seoul.

Mr. Chung warned that North Korea could use drones to attack by loading biological and chemical weapons on them and launching them. A 2016 report by the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses showed that Pyongyang is believed to possess up to 25 chemical weapons and 13 types of pathogens that can be used as biological weapons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is believed to have ordered the development of various types of drones. The program, called Banghyun, has been in place since the early 1990s, Yonhap news agency reported.

North Korean drones can reach speeds of 160 km/h and carry a payload of 20-24 kg.
