North Korea recalls a series of ambassadors to the country for meetings

August 14, 2017 16:15

Yonhap news agency said North Korean ambassadors to China, Russia and the United Nations have been summoned back to their country to attend a meeting.

"After recalling ambassadors from major countries to Pyongyang, North Korea is holding an event that could be a meeting of heads of diplomatic missions abroad," Yonhap quoted a South Korean government official as saying.

Among those summoned were North Korean Ambassador to China Ji Jae Ryong, Ambassador to Russia Kim Hyong Jun and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ja Song Nam.

The official did not specify how many ambassadors had been called back to North Korea for the meeting.

South Korean Unification Ministry spokesman Baik Tae Hyun said the meeting could be part of North Korea's regular ambassadorial summons.

"North Korea held its 43rd ambassadorial meeting in July 2015 and this latest meeting appears to be similar," the spokesman said.

There are also suspicions that the ambassadors' meeting is related to the current tensions between North Korea and the United States over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

The meeting, according to Yonhap, could be related to threats from North Korea to conduct another missile or nuclear test.
