On the morning of July 1, South Korean Navy officials contacted a North Korean Navy patrol vessel. The call was reportedly made via international radio channels.
North Korea responded immediately, and communication lines did not encounter any problems, representatives of the South Korean Navy emphasized.
At the end of June, at the checkpoint in Phaju district, for the first time in 7 years, a meeting took place between colonel-level officers of the two sides.
At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to restore communication lines in the western and eastern parts of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea in the near future with the aim of preventing incidents and resolving emerging issues.
The lines of communication will ensure the exchange of information between the two sides via telephone and fax. The two lines of communication mentioned above were first established in 2002 and 2003.
