Exhibition of Dong Ho and Hang Trong folk paintings in the Old Quarter.

Two famous Vietnamese folk painting styles, Dong Ho paintings and Hang Trong paintings, were introduced and showcased at the Heritage House at 87 Ma May Street (Hanoi) on January 24th, 2014, to celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Horse. This activity was organized by the Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board to evoke the atmosphere of Tet (Lunar New Year) of the past in the Hanoi Old Quarter..

Here, viewers can appreciate the unique aspects of daily life and spirit through folk paintings, and witness firsthand the masterful brushstrokes of artisans and artists passionate about two traditional painting styles. Hang Trong paintings are a folk painting style produced in the Hang Trong and Hang Non streets of old Hanoi, with two main purposes: paintings for religious and spiritual purposes, decorating temples, pagodas, shrines, and other places of worship; and paintings for the traditional custom of collecting paintings, especially during the Lunar New Year.

Dong Ho paintings depict a legend or a philosophical fable, a colorful message about morality, ethics, and profound beliefs. The prints also showcase wit and the cozy atmosphere of the Lunar New Year, conveying messages of happiness, good fortune, and prosperity.

The program runs until February 16th. In addition to introducing and showcasing two valuable painting styles, the Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board will organize traditional music and art performances at historical sites during the Lunar New Year from February 1st to February 3rd: Kim Ngan Temple (42-44 Hang Bac Street), Dong Lac Temple (38 Hang Dao Street), and the Old Quarter Information Center (28 Hang Buom Street).
