Planting red bean for 75 days earns over 100 million VND/ha
(Baonghean.vn) - With a planting time of only 75 days from sowing to harvest; easy to care for, few pests, low investment costs and high productivity, in recent years, farmers in Anh Son district have planted red pomelo trees for fruit, bringing in an income of over 100 million VND/ha.
Quickly cutting the plump fruit, Ms. Le Thi Lan, village 4, Cam Son commune said:Her family has been growing red pomelo since 2013, realizing that this is an easy-to-grow plant, does not require much care, and has a stable price and a higher income than growing other short-term crops, so her family maintains it every year. Currently, with an area of 2 sao, her family harvests more than 3 tons of fruit, at a price of 5,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, her family earns over 10 million VND.

According to Ms. Lan: “The red mulberry tree is suitable for the soil, so it grows well, has few pests and diseases, especially in addition to harvesting the fruit, at the beginning of the season, people also have income from the tops and flowers. Moreover, in recent years, the most favorable thing about growing red mulberry is that there is no need to worry about output, every harvest season, traders come to the fields to buy, so people are very secure.
Mr. Mai Van Kien's family in village 9, Tao Son commune has been growing red mulberry trees for more than 5 years. Mr. Kien said: This winter crop, the family continues to grow 3 sao on rice fields. With the characteristics of being easy to grow, easy to care for, and not requiring much labor. After only 75 days from planting to harvesting, red mulberry trees have brought higher efficiency than other crops on the same area. Moreover, the investment cost for red mulberry from seeds and fertilizers is low, mainly from composted manure. This is a type of plant that crawls on the ground, so it does not require expensive investment in trellises compared to other crops. Mr. Kien calculated that since the first harvest, his family has sold 4 tons of fruit, with the field price of 5,000 VND/kg, he earned over 20 million VND.

Mr. Phan Sy Quy - Vice Chairman of Tao Son Commune People's Committee said: In recent years, the conversion of crop structure in Tao Son has been strongly developed. Many households have actively sought new models to put into production that bring high economic efficiency such as growing squash, bitter melon, and red betel. Currently, the whole commune has nearly 10 hectares of betel planting area. According to the assessment, on average, 1 sao of red betel yields 1.5-2 tons, after deducting costs, the income is from 100-120 million VND/ha.
According to farmers' experience, red squash is a drought-resistant plant, grows quickly, and has a short growing period. On the other hand, this is a crop with few pests and diseases, and requires little use of pesticides, so the investment cost is low. In addition, squash shoots and flowers are also a significant source of additional income for farmers.

The whole Anh Son district currently has nearly 100 hectares of red mulberry, which is grown in many communes such as Cam Son, Dinh Son, Tao Son, Thach Son, Linh Son. The mulberry contains many nutrients, has a thick shell, is chewy and sweet, and can be preserved for a long time, making it very convenient for product consumption. In order for red mulberry to become a key crop, Anh Son district has oriented people to expand the planting area by region, especially in alluvial land; organize training courses on planting and care techniques for farmers.
