Growing shallots on high land costs 250 million VND/ha
(Baonghean.vn) - On highland areas, land for growing cassava and sugarcane with low efficiency, farmers in Nghia Trung commune have switched to growing shallots with an income of 250 million VND/ha.

From growing onions for family use, the area of chives gradually expanded, some families planted 1 sao, 2 sao but there were also households invested in growing nearly a hectare of onions. Growing chives, harvesting is the hardest part.
Ms. Le Thi Sam, hamlet 21, Nghia Trung commune, said: Shallots are easy to grow, have few pests and diseases, are drought-resistant, and are especially suitable for high-altitude soil. The crop season begins in August every year and is harvested in March of the following year. Each crop, her family grows 2 sao of shallots, and after deducting expenses, the income is more than 15 million VND/crop.
"After sowing onions, spread dry sugarcane leaves on top until harvest time, very easy. Growing onions brings in 5 times more income than growing corn and sugarcane," Ms. Sam added.
Mr. Nguyen Van Vi, hamlet 21, Nghia Trung commune, converted his hillside land area from low-yield sugarcane and cassava to growing shallots and each year he harvests nearly 10 million VND/crop.

Currently, Nghia Trung grows more than 10 hectares of chives, farmers earn over 1.5 billion VND from chives/year. Growing chives goes through many stages such as plowing the land, cleaning weeds, and making high beds. After sowing, cover with straw or dry pine needles to keep the moisture for the plant to grow and create loose soil for large and bright bulbs.

Mr. Ngo Sy Can - Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Nghia Trung Commune said: "Shallots are a traditional crop of Nghia Trung, currently the commune has 10 hectares of shallots. In the new rural construction, Nghia Trung strives to increase people's income by converting crops, and shallots are a very effective crop. From shallot products, people can sell fresh bulbs or grind them into dried onions. Each hectare of shallots can bring in an income of up to 250 million VND. The commune is continuing to expand the area and improve the quality to create a brand for the product".
