Growing sweet potatoes as clean vegetables for 'huge' income

(Baonghean.vn) - In addition to the area of ​​sweet potato for tubers, to grasp the needs of consumers, farmers in Nghi Loc (Nghe An) have developed a specialized area of ​​sweet potato to take the tops and leaves as clean vegetables for "huge" income.

Growing sweet potatoes to harvest leaves and shoots to sell clean vegetables is developed by Nghi Loc farmers to supply the Vinh City market and neighboring districts.

The areas planted with shoots and leaves are harvested after about 1 month of sowing. Vegetables are harvested continuously for about 4-5 months before having to be destroyed to plant a new crop. Through practical research from farmers, on average, 1 sao of sweet potato for sale can bring an average income of about 15 million VND/year. What is special is that sweet potato shoots are very popular in the market, so the source of sweet potato vegetables supplied to the market is always in a state of "supply" not meeting "demand".

Currently, farmers in the communes of Nghi Long, Nghi Thinh, Nghi Xuan, Nghi Thach, Nghi Truong, Nghi Thuan... produce more than 110 hectares of sweet potatoes for the 2016 Winter crop, an increase of nearly 50 hectares compared to last year.

This winter crop, Ms. Le Thi Phuong's family - Hamlet 16, Nghi Long Commune produced nearly 2 sao of sweet potatoes. Of which, 50% of the area she planted was to harvest the tops to sell to the market, the rest she used Japanese sweet potatoes to get tubers. Ms. Phuong said: "Sweet potatoes are very easy to grow, just need to plow the soil to loosen, make rows for the potatoes to grow green and well for high yield and quality. Besides, the output is guaranteed, selling at a good price, and does not cost much in care. This year, after only harvesting 1 sao of sweet potato tops in 4 months, the family has earned more than 7 million VND. The happiest thing is that the harvested vegetables are bought by traders at home, not having to go to sell".

Currently, in Nghi Loc there are over 110 hectares of sweet potatoes, of which 50% of the area is used to grow leaves and shoots as clean vegetables.

This crop does not have many harmful pests and diseases, and the care techniques are simple, so anyone can do it. Moreover, the harvest is often right on Tet holiday, the selling price is high and the preservation time is long. Therefore, expanding the area of ​​sweet potatoes is the direction chosen by many people in the localities. However, if the area is increased, farmers need to have businesses or organizations and individuals to connect and create stable output".
