Growing Thai jackfruit on Nam Dan land
(Baonghean) - Thai jackfruit is an easy-to-grow fruit tree with many fruits, large segments, small seeds, thin skin, delicious and sweet. The Thai jackfruit growing model of Mr. Tran Van Thuan's family in Ve Nong hamlet, Van Dien commune (Nam Dan) brings in an income of more than 100 million VND/year, opening up many new prospects for the semi-mountainous areas...
Talking about the reason for choosing Thai jackfruit, Mr. Thuan said: Previously, on an area of nearly 2 hectares of hill garden, his family mainly planted cassava and eucalyptus, so the economic efficiency was not high. Responding to the movement to eliminate mixed gardens and develop hill garden economy, in 2009, his family boldly invested, re-planned the garden and planted more than 100 Thai jackfruit trees.

Thai jackfruit variety produces fruit from 7-15 kg. |
This is a tree that is suitable for many types of soil, especially hilly soil. The time from planting to harvest is only 18 months, bearing fruit all year round, with an average weight of 7 - 15 kg per fruit. According to Mr. Thuan's experience, although Thai jackfruit is easy to grow, it requires regular watering, fertilization (preferably manure) and monitoring to prevent stem and fruit borers.
After each fruit picking, you must cut off excess branches so that the tree receives enough light to help the fruit grow big and sweet. In addition, you should prune the fruit at the top of the branch, keeping only the fruit that hugs the trunk and is close to the base. If the tree is still small, only keep a maximum of about 10 fruits per tree. When the tree is mature, the number of fruits can be increased.
In particular, the older the Thai jackfruit is grown, the sweeter and more delicious the segments will be. From growing Thai jackfruit, his family earns over 100 million VND each year. He added: “Once, by chance, I saw an introduction to Thai jackfruit on TV, so I went all the way to the North to buy seeds to plant. In general, Thai jackfruit has high economic value, on average 12,000 - 15,000 VND per kg. I will sell it in a few weeks. From growing Thai jackfruit, life is now much less difficult, I can buy a motorbike, a refrigerator, and have the conditions to raise my children to go to school.”

Thai jackfruit trees not only help Mr. Thuan's family escape poverty but also accumulate capital to continue investing in building stable pig farms to develop a stable herd of 100 - 150 pigs, selling 25 - 30 quintals of pigs each year, earning 100 - 120 million VND. In addition to taking care of the fruit garden, he also contracted 2 hectares of pine forest to exploit resin to earn an additional income of 50 million VND/year.
With this approach, his family has become a typical example of developing hill garden economy for high and sustainable economic efficiency. Commenting on this model, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hung - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Van Dien commune affirmed: "The Thai jackfruit growing model of Mr. Thuan's family, although new, brings quite high income.
In addition, he does not hesitate to share his experiences and guide people on how to plant and care for trees. Recently, he has provided seedlings to people, thus creating favorable conditions for people to boldly get rich from this crop. In the near future, he plans to continue expanding the area of Thai jackfruit cultivation, both to increase income and for people to visit and learn.
