"Growing vegetables on the roof" won international science gold medal
Contributing to the achievement of 7 gold medals and 2 silver medals of the Vietnamese delegation participating in the 2013 International Young Science and Technology Innovation Competition (IEYI) held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) were 2 11th grade students from Hanoi, Nguyen Chau Anh and Nguyen Dang An.
With their topic, the two "teenage scientists" hope that the "rooftop vegetable growing system in urban areas" will be widely applied, so that more and more people can eat clean vegetables to ensure their health.

(Source: thucphamsieusach.com)Nguyen Chau Anh, a student of 11th grade Chemistry 1 - Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, and Nguyen Dang An, a student of 11th grade T1 - Thang Long High School, said that the idea of "System of growing clean vegetables on rooftops in urban areas" was very simple, because every day they heard their parents complaining that they did not know which vegetables were clean when going to the market to buy vegetables for the family, they were not safe to eat, and had a high risk of affecting their health.
Because they live close to each other and are the same age, Chau Anh and Dang An have played together since childhood, so they can easily share and understand each other, and most importantly, they share a burning passion for scientific research. Therefore, at first, both of them nurtured the idea, then quietly discussed and came up with a direction to develop the topic, and worked together to carry it out. With the little money they had saved, they saved up to buy materials to make the model.
However, due to lack of funds, Chau Anh and Dang An had to ask for help from their families. When presenting their ideas to their parents, they received both spiritual and material appreciation. In addition, another great motivation was the encouragement from teachers and friends at school who helped them complete the project within seven months.
According to Nguyen Dang An, the idea was like that but when implementing it, they encountered many difficulties, they had to invest in thinking and struggling to find a solution. Therefore, in addition to the time spent studying, they also had to spend a lot of time searching for documents, experimenting, exchanging with each other every day, sometimes even arguing to find the best solution for growing vegetables on high-rise roofs in urban areas.
Chau Anh said that through research, she found that currently, all high-rise buildings have roofs, so taking advantage of that space, she designed and built vegetable beds, then filled them with soil to grow things like water spinach, cabbage, kohlrabi and some types of climbing vegetables.
To help vegetables survive in harsh environments, the two "scientists" designed roofs, drainage ditches, and automatic water sprinklers that operate at preset times. This way, there is light and enough water for the vegetables to grow well.
On May 11, in the capital of Malaysia, the model "Clean vegetable growing system on rooftops in urban areas" was honored with a worthy reward of a gold medal. The organizing committee also awarded the gold cup to the model for the best idea in the same topic and category.
With bright faces and confident and intelligent conversation, Nguyen Chau Anh and Nguyen Dang An both modestly said that this was an unexpected result.
In addition to scientific research, both of them are excellent students in their studies. Teacher Pham Quy Thai, Nguyen Dang An's homeroom teacher, proudly talks about his student: Dang An studies all subjects well, learns quickly, and gets along well with his classmates. In particular, An clearly demonstrates the qualities of a researcher, always calm and proactive in seeking knowledge.
Mr. Thai added that the students' topic was awarded second prize in the contest organized by Vifotec Vietnam Foundation in 2012.
As for Nguyen Chau Anh, she was the valedictorian of the Chemistry class at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School. She has been an excellent student in all her years. She is currently the class monitor and is a member of the school's Debate Club.
Chau Anh and Dang An's dream is to become environmental scientists. To realize their dream of opening up the sky of knowledge, the "two friends progressing together" are investing a lot of time to improve their English knowledge and focus on studying for university entrance exams.
The idea originated from daily life, won an international award, bringing pride not only to family, friends, teachers, but also to the whole country. This is the greatest achievement that both of them have achieved, it will be a support for Chau Anh and Dang An to continue studying, striving, and contributing to the country's science and technology./.
