Vietnamese referees and players make consecutive mistakes: Subjective or not knowing the rules?

(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, both Vietnamese referees and players have made confusing mistakes on the field. It is even more blameworthy when among them are FIFA referees and former national players.

When the "king of the field" forgets the rules

Referee Tran Van Lap made a series of serious mistakes in the 1-1 draw in round 22 of the NutiCafé V-League 2018 on the afternoon of September 14, 2018. Most notably, he forgot to give a red card to defender Ho Tan Tai (Binh Duong) in the Binh Duong - Quang Ninh match after giving the player a second yellow card.

The funny thing is that both the referee and the two assistant referees were absent-minded in this situation and Tan Tai participated in Binh Duong's subsequent goal - a goal that was not recognized and caused fierce controversy.

Recently, in the match between Viettel and Hanoi at Hang Day Stadium, both FIFA assistant referee Nguyen Trung Hau and FIFA referee Tran Dinh Thinh “did not know their lesson” in the situation of Viettel FC’s 11m kick. Both of them failed to detect that goalkeeper Nguyen Van Cong (Hanoi FC) had stepped onto the goal line before the Viettel striker took the kick.

According to football rules, when goalkeeper Van Cong commits a foul, even if he blocks the ball, the referee must still retake the penalty. However, both the main referee and assistant 1, who were standing quite close to the situation, did not detect this foul. Therefore, Viettel Club was only allowed to take a corner kick when the ball went out of bounds, thereby affecting the result of the match.

It's the goalkeeper's turn to make a "silly" mistake.

Recently, the situation of "not understanding the rules" by Tan Truong caused this goalkeeper to make a mistake in the first goal of B. Binh Duong and then lost 1-3 to Ceres Negros in the second match of AFC Cup 2019 right at home.

In the 26th minute of the match, when the game was balanced, goalkeeper Tan Truong “gave” the representative of the Philippines a goal. The assistant referee raised the flag to signal offside for the attack of the Ceres Negros player, but because he saw that the ball was controlled by Tan Truong, the main referee “overruled the flag” and did not blow the whistle.

The ball was still in play, but goalkeeper Tan Truong did not catch the ball but continued to play with it. The Ceres Negros player saw this and quickly stole the ball and scored the opening goal of the match. This dispute was completely legal, this elementary mistake will haunt Tan Truong for a long time.

If the first goal could be blamed on not understanding the referee, but in the second goal, Tan Truong made an inexplicable mistake. The audience at Go Dau Stadium was completely dissatisfied with Tan Truong's performance and shouted "match-fixing, match-fixing". Because after the second goal, the whole team's mentality completely went down, leading to another goal and accepting defeat with a score of 1-3 right at home.

These are elementary mistakes that any player or referee entering the profession must have been equipped with knowledge about. Almost every season, the Referee Board and the Clubs have training sessions on Football Laws, but there are still regrettable mistakes that make people have the right to doubt the quality of current law guidance.

The referees who made mistakes were disciplined by the Referee Board, and Tan Truong's inexplicable mistake cost the home team dearly. But the bigger loss was the image of FIFA referees and the level of Vietnamese players, especially when the match between B.Binh Duong and Ceres Negros was broadcast live to the Southeast Asian region.

Fans have the right to ask: Is the selection of FIFA referee titles accurate? If FIFA referee Tran Dinh Thinh can still handle situations like that, what level are the other referees in black? Is the connection between the main referee and his colleagues at V.League not good, leading to such mistakes?

Foreign professional clubs often compile “silly” situations on the field and send them to their players to avoid. This is also a good way that V.League and first-class clubs should refer to in order to gradually improve the image of Vietnamese football in the eyes of fans.
