It has been six years since an English referee officiated a Champions League final, since Howard Webb in 2010.
Clattenburg, 41, is one of the most respected referees in England. He was chosen to referee this season's FA Cup final between Man Utd and Crystal Palace. He was also called up for duty at Euro 2016.
This season, Clattenburg has refereed six Champions League matches, including the first leg of the semi-final between Atletico and Bayern.
Clattenburg's last major game was the London derby between Chelsea and Tottenham. He was a good referee before a brawl broke out between the two teams. Clattenburg issued a total of 12 yellow cards, nine of which were against Tottenham.
The experience from the "Battle of Stamford Bridge" will help Clattenburg in the Champions League final. The Madrid derby is always fierce, tense, and full of collisions.
The Europa League final between Liverpool and Sevilla was refereed by Swedish referee Jonas Eriksson.
