Vietnamese referee dies after stroke during physical test

Referee Duong Ngoc Tan passed away at Bach Mai Hospital on the morning of April 7 after 5 days of treatment due to a stroke following a physical examination of referees and assistant referees.

Previously, on April 2, Mr. Duong Ngoc Tan suffered a stroke during the referee and assistant referee fitness test before the 2018 First Division tournament. Mr. Tan was taken to Xanh Pon Hospital for emergency treatment and then transferred to Bach Mai Hospital.

During his days of treatment at Bach Mai Hospital, referee Tan was able to recognize his family, eat porridge and drink milk through a feeding tube. However, this morning (April 7), he passed away after 5 days in the hospital.

Referee Duong Ngoc Tan's family is doing the paperwork to bring him back to his hometown Yen Bai.

Referee Tan’s death at the age of 37 is a great loss for his family as well as the Vietnamese refereeing community. This is also the first time a referee in Vietnam has died after participating in a physical test.

Referee Duong Ngoc Tan usually holds the position of assistant referee of the National First Division football tournament. During the recent physical examination, Mr. Tan completed all the required tests such as physical running and speed running before fainting and being taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.
