The US Army said a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crashed into a drone over New York City on the evening of September 21. Although no one was injured, the UH-60 suffered a chipped propeller and a dented window due to the collision, Sputnik reported.
The two UH-60s, part of the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division, were flying about 150 meters above the ground at the time. "The drone crashed into the left side of the helicopter, but the flight did not affect the pilot, who then landed safely at Linden Airport in New Jersey. The damaged propeller had to be replaced," said 82nd Airborne Division spokesman Joe Buccino.
The UH-60s were part of the security force for the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City. The incident is being investigated by city officials.
According to safety regulations of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), civilian drones such as flycams are only allowed to operate at an altitude of less than 120 m, and must stay away from other aircraft. The FAA also prohibits flycams from operating in major cities, except in areas above parks.
This is not the first time a civilian drone has caused a collision in New York. In March, one crashed into a Con Edison power plant in Brooklyn, while another crashed into a 27th-floor apartment window in Manhattan.
