US military helicopter crashes, two soldiers killed

An AH-64 Apache helicopter crashed early yesterday morning at the National Training Center in Fort Irwin, southern California,Reutersquoted Lieutenant Colonel Jason Brown, a US military spokesman, said.

Another spokesman added that both the pilot and co-pilot were killed but did not provide their identities. The families of the victims have not yet been notified.

The crew and helicopter were both based at Fort Carson in Colorado and were participating in training at the base in the Mojave Desert, said Fort Carson spokeswoman Brandy Gill.

The AH-64 Apache helicopter is manufactured in Arizona by Boeing, which has signed a five-year, $3.4 billion contract to build Apache helicopters for the U.S. military and an unnamed foreign customer.

According to Boeing's website, 2,200 AH-64 Apache helicopters have been sold globally since the US military received the first in January 1984. Egypt, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the UK are all customers for the AH-64 Apache.
