"Today, we arrested the leader of a criminal gang accused of attempting to murder his own daughter because she had an affair with an Italian police officer," AFP quoted Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano as saying on October 31.
Mafia boss Pino Scaduto had previously blamed his daughter's relationship for his arrest and conviction. Investigators discovered that before his release in April, the boss had communicated with his subordinates outside and ordered a "gift" to be given to his biological daughter.
The inspector said that Scaduto had instructed his own son to carry out the assassination, saying: "My sister is an informer." However, the defendant's son disobeyed the order.
“I don’t want to do it,” the son said in a conversation recorded by police. “If you want to do it, you can do it yourself. Why should I deal with this? I’m 30 years old.”
"Godfather" Scaduto, head of the Bagheria crime organization operating in the Sicilian capital Palermo, later assigned the task to an assassin, but the assassin also refused because he did not want to get involved in family conflicts.
"The Mafia often consider themselves men of honor. Where is the honor when you order the killing of your own child?", Foreign Minister Alfano stressed.
In this arrest, police charged Scaduto and 15 other members of the Bagheria organization with extorting businesses in the construction and mineral water industries.
